How to start a career in Cybersecurity?

What is Cybersecurity & its scope?

Cybersecurity involves preventing, detecting and responding to cyberattacks that can have far-reaching impacts on individuals, organizations, communities and even at the national level. Concern about cyber threats is growing, and critical infrastructure is increasingly exposed to complex cyber intrusions that pose new risks.

Cyberspace and its underlying infrastructure are exposed to a wide range of risks arising from both physical and cyber threats and threats. Our daily lives, our economic vitality and our national security depend on stable, secure and resilient cyberspace.

According to a Gartner study of 2018, the global cybersecurity market is expected to reach $170.4 billion by 2022. Rapid market growth is driven by several new technology initiatives such as cloud-based application workloads that require the security of traditional data centres and connected Internet of Things devices as well as the stringent privacy requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union and the Cybersecurity Framework of the National Institute of Security and Technologies.

As cloud and mobile computing continue to grow and more and more applications and information are accessed over the Internet, it is changing and involves broader security risks. For example, companies building multiplayer video games, start-ups working on browser-based productivity apps, and so on are concerned about user safety.

As a cybersecurity expert, you will have a wide range of career options across an extensive variety of industries (e.g. finance, government, retail, etc.). But Cybersecurity is a specialist field. You are unlikely to start your professional career as a penetration tester or a security engineer. So the question remains — how do you get started?

Where to Start?

There is no defined path to get into Cybersecurity. People come at it with different backgrounds - Science, Computer, IT, Electronics, Communication. Yet each of them shares a deep interest and curiosity in how technology works.

Get trained in IT

Getting general IT fundamentals is most important, to begin with. You must have a basic understanding of administering & configuring systems, networking, database, programming. If you are from Computer Science or IT, this would be easier for you. Getting an Internship/Training will help you learn things & you will be familiar with real-world IT operations.

Focus on Interests

Cybersecurity is a vast field. There are different domains in it e.g. Security Engineer, Ethical hacker, Penetration Tester, Mobile Security, Web Security, Network Audit, IoT Security, Cyber Forensics, etc. As it is impossible to master everything, you must find your best interest to go ahead.

Get Practical Experience

Finally, We would recommend you to get as much practical knowledge  Staying up to date with technology trends and Cybersecurity is a must! You can opt for Self-learning, Free Online Courses, Interactive training and Instructor-led training.
